As a natural heritage site, Grootfontein farm is committed for posterity to the preservation of one of the few remaining wilderness areas. Owned by the Olivier brothers, Grootfontein farm adjoins the Groot Winterhoek Mountain Catchment Area and the Cederberg Leopard Conservation Area and is a successful example of agritourism.
The rivers have channeled their way through rock formations into deep pools and waterfalls. There are several caves on the farm, some of which are decorated with paintings. All rock art is protected by the National Monuments Act and the best means of preservation is restricted access.
The rustic and tranquil campsite surrounded by wild mountains offers meditative peace and quiet and is a balm for the soul. A spectacular mountain pool with waterfall is within a 5 minute walk.

Those who don't want to camp can book one of our cottages.

Monte Christo's Campsite offers 30 sites with electricity and safe drinking water (fountain water). The Ablution has hot showers, scullery and laundry areas. The hot water is provided by a wood burning "donkey" (we supply the wood, you do the stoking!).
Most of the sites are shaded and covered with grass. You have direct access to a hiking trail leading up in the gorge where you will discover waterfalls and rockpools.

The campsite also offers a swimming pool.

4X4 Route 

 This is a well planned route through blue gum plantations, rocky riverbed crossings, to the scenic mountain section with spectacular views and will ensure enough driving activities to satisfy driver's needs as well as that of passengers. The photographers will have enough time to shoot that special action photo of a fellow participant on the route or a panoramic shot overlooking one of our major dams in the Western Cape, the Piketberg mountains, Riebeek kasteel mountains, the green snake of a Bergriver, Oom Paul-se-Berg and even Table mountain on a clear day."

Beaverlac offers various cottages which are in stone or wood. These cottages accommodate from 2-6 people

The area is a sanctuary for several wildlife species and someimes you can hear the cries of Baboons as they forage in the mountains. Beaverlac's rich diversity of birds includes the majestic Black Eagle, Jackal Buzzard and colourful sunbirds and is truly a paradise for bird lovers.
Our rivers are home to Clanwilliam Redfins and the rare Clanwilliam Yellowfish, both protected species. Bass occur in abundance. Fishing in the Olifants is a 5km walk or cycle so make a day of it and pack a picnic basket.
The area hosts several species of which the Rhebok and Klipspringer are most likely to be spotted, unlike the caracal, wild cat and shy leopard.

Nomadic herders crossing the Cedarberg mountain range, several hundred years ago, would drop pumpkin seeds at the spring (fontein) where they stopped for water. In this manner, pumpkins would grow around the fountain and henceforth the area acquired the name Pampoen Fontein.

Our farm has four fully equipped cottages for hire. All are tastefully furnished and supplied with hand-embroidered bed linen, towels, wood, coffee, tea and soap. Each has an indoor fireplace for winter (it snows on the farm from time to time!) and an outside braai area. All you need take is your food and drink.
